GEM is an important contributor to  the future of management with three editors-in-chief of prestigious scientific journals in management and organization theory among its faculty members: Gazi Islam (OWIC) for Journal of Business Ethics, Dirk Lindebaum (AFMO) for Academy of Management Learning & Education and Marcos Barros (AFMO) for Organization. Discover their profiles below:

Who are they?

Marcos Barros (AFMO) is Full Professor at GEM. His research interests include alternative forms of organization, technology, and critical perspectives on identity and resistance. His research has been published in Organization, Organization Studies, Organization Science, Journal of Business Ethics, M @ n @ gement and Journal of Management Inquiry.

Gazi Islam (OWIC) is Professor at GEM and member of the research laboratory IREGE. His research interests include the psychology of workplace relations, the nature of work and business ethics.

Dirk Lindebaum (AFMO) is Senior Professor at GEM and a Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta School of Business, Canada. He is curious about "values" as meta-theme in his research, particularly in relation to learning, theory building, technology and emotions at work. His work regularly appears in journals of international distinction, and is frequently discussed in the media and other outlets.

How long have you been editor-in-chief?

Marcos has been EIC since January 1st 2023.
Gazi has been EIC since January 1st, 2021.
Dirk has been an Associate Editor with AMLE for nearly 3 years, and will become EIC starting July 2023.

Can you say a few words about the Journals?

Marcos: Organization is the main journal for critical organization studies. We focus on research that unveils and challenges unequal power structures and dynamics, analyzes resistance to these structures, explores different alternatives to them through different voices, practices, knowledge, experiences, etc., and engages in emancipatory transformation of organizations.

Gazi: Journal of Business ethics aims to improve the human condition by providing a public forum for discussion and debate about ethical issues related to business. The journal has a multidisciplinary focus, covering topics from the social sciences and humanities related to business ethics.

Dirk: AMLE is at the forefront of studies on management learning, management education, or the "business of business schools". It publishes theory, empirical research, reviews, critiques, and resources that touch on the three aforementioned topics. AMLE studies appear regularly in the news and often generate impact on practice.

How does this role make a strong impact on Research at GEM?

Marcos: Organization is at the forefront of creating different perspectives on business that contributes to a better society, which is at the center of GEM’s mission. As EIC, I have privileged access into the current and future debates that shape the way we think about alternative organization and practices that have the human at its center.

Gazi: Journal of Business Ethics is the largest and one of the oldest academic publications in the area of business ethics. Given GEM’s status as a "Société a Mission", and it’s goal of being a Business Lab for Society, there is a fundamental alignment of JBE with GEMs social mission, which can diffuse through the teaching, research collaborations and institutional practices of GEM.

Dirk: There are two responses to this question. First, I believe that being an EIC, and having EICs from other journals who work at GEM, can contribute to a thriving research culture. Second, AMLE regularly publishes studies consistent with GEM’s mission to "provide responses to the challenges related to the ecological, societal and economic transitions".
