This doctoral research was put forth in order to gain insight into the relationship between emotional intelligence and the job performance of university professors.
Design / Methodology / Approach
This dissertation was approached using a quantitative research methodology. The theoretical framework of this research was divided into three major parts: emotional intelligence, job performance, and the relationship between emotional and job performance. The objectives of this thesis were reached through a sample representation based on four major Lebanese universities whereby collected data were analyzed and presented.
The findings of this research show that emotional intelligence has positive impact on the job performance of university professors represented through the professor’s classroom teaching effectiveness. Moreover, the personality of the professor moderates this relationship.
Research Limitations / Implications
The first limitation is the sample size, though it is statistically accepted. The reason is that the researcher resides in Dubai and was not able to stay for a longer period in Lebanon to enlarge his sample size.
The second limitation relates to sampling procedure. Getting permission to access campuses for data collection is complicated. The researcher decided to use his personal contacts as a university instructor. The questionnaires were self-administered; however, the question remains whether a complete random sample might generate different results.
The third limitation relates to the fact that the researcher could not include all the factors that affect the job performance of the university professor since it will be difficult to get access to some data that might be restricted by the universities.
Suggestions for future research are that the sample could be made much larger in order to generalize the findings across all private Lebanese universities. Also, the sample could include the public university. Furthermore, the study could be extended to other universities in the area and have a comparative study over that. In addition, other factors related to job performance could be added to the research model.
The implications of the study are divided into three different categories: performance, interpersonal effectiveness and teamwork, and emotional stability. The first implication advocates a better performance inside the classroom when it comes to the dynamic interaction between the professor and his students.
The second implication is related to being better able to manage our relationship both at work and life in general. Also, at the team level, teamwork becomes more dynamic, synergetic, and cooperative when team members are aware of the emotional interaction that is required at the team level.
The third implication is related to the personal emotional stability, which is essential for every individual to leverage his emotions and feelings positively in order to lead a better life.
Originality / Value
This research is the first time to be conducted in Lebanon. It reveals the importance of emotional intelligence as a pedagogical tool at the university level.
