Following a successful career in the industrial manufacturing and engineering/construction
industries, Timothy Connerton is currently a professor of Organizational Behavior,Leadership, Strategic Management, Creating Sustainable Value and Marketing in bachelor’s and MBA/master’s programs at three universities in Switzerland. He also advises leaders on strategy and change management, motivates businesses to undergo transformation, and facilitates organizational development and empowerment.
This doctoral thesis set out to explore, analyze and fully understand the motivational effects of leadership characteristics in the factories of manufacturing organizations. Utilizing a qualitative, multisite case study methodology with the spirit and perspectives of phenomenology and grounded theory, the research was conducted through interviews with 48 people, observations and surveys at five factory locations in Europe and the United States, and written in simple text for telling these pertinent stories with rich description.
The objective for this research was not to prove the value of any particular theory of leadership or to use a specific category to prove any hypothetical propositions. After a holistic study of the effects of leadership characteristics and their paths of influence on organizational work settings and individuals, the focus of this thesis became the identity of the specific leadership characteristics that motivate factory organizations and employees.
The important discoveries in this thesis were: (a) the designation of the eight most important leadership characteristics that contribute to employees’ motivation and an empowered work environment, and (b) the realization that four levels of leadership are most relevant for affecting motivation in the factory work environment.
This dissertation, through rigorous methodology and insightful interpretation of the data, should be valuable for new academic knowledge and useful managerial application.Key Words: leadership, leadership characteristics, organizational behavior, motivation, empowerment, factory work environments, levels of leadership, leader influences and effects.
