Ambidexterity in Returnee Entrepreneur Dual Network Embeddedness, Decision Logic and Entrepreneurial Growth

Xinchun Louvier-Externe
Purpose At this key point in China’s transformation and upgrading, attracting overseas Chinese talent back to China has become a critical means for transnational knowledge transfer and innovation-driven development. Returnee entrepreneurship is a process of transnational knowledge transfer based on talent. Returnee entrepreneurs learned from their host countries and accumulated advanced technological and managerial experience. Bringing this experience back home can improve the innovation of returnee startups. However, the higher failure rate of returnee entrepreneurs in comparison to local enterpreneurs is an undisputed fact. As a result, how to resolve the problem of the so-called “3/3/3” is the focus of the author. Design/methodology/approach This article aims to find out how does the dual network advantage affect returnee entrepreneurs’ entrepreneurial performance. Organizational ambidexterity theory incorporates embedding in the local network into the same analysis framework as embedding in the overseas network. Research in this field empirically examines the impact of the combined ambidexterity and fitted ambidexterity on the entrepreneurial performance of the returnee firms, and attempts to explore the moderating effects of entrepreneurial decision-making logic and organizational learning on the relationship between dual network embeddedness ambidexterity and returnee entrepreneurial performance. Findings Based on the empirical results of 377 questionnaires completed by overseas returnee entrepreneurs, the finding suggest that the combined ambidexterity and fitted ambidexterity between the embeddedness of both the local network and the overseas network are capable of significantly benefitting the performance of returnee entrepreneurs. Research limitations/implications This article is only concerned with certain RE characteristics reflected through some variables, such as human capital and overseas social networks. Further study regarding the influence of the sense of values and psychological patterns of REs need to be improved. Due to the limitation of availability of materials and data, primary interview data and use case study tools such as ground theory can be further introduced in future research. Practical implications This research explores the application of organizational ambidexterity theory in the field of network embeddedness, and conducts an empirical study on the ambidexterity effect of returnee entrepreneurial firms in terms of the embeddedness of overseas networks and local networks, which serve t supplement the body of research in the field of organizational ambidexterity and expand its scope, while deepening our understanding of the growth mechanisms of returnee entrepreneurial firms.
