Team boundary-spanning activities of technology transfer : how is team performance in China?

Purpose This study focuses on the actors, including internal and external factors of team boundary-spanning activities of technology transfer. By integrating theoretical research at large and small levels, the team effectiveness theory is introduced at the intermediate level. A multi-level research team approach was developed to discuss the causes, behaviors and consequences of team boundary-spanning activities in the context of technology transfer. Combining the "top-down" task factors of organizational structure and the "bottom-up" feedback environmental factors of team members' boundary-spanning activities, the relationships between team boundary-spanning activities and team performance are discussed by using the IMOI model of team effectiveness theory. Empirical analysis was also conducted to figure out, the role of team boundary-spanning activities on team performance in the context of technology transfer in China, and finally recommend suitable management. Design/methodology/approach A total of 7 hypotheses were tested by questionnaires from 402 teams, and the surveyed data were quantitatively analyzed by the Structural Equation Model. Findings This study found that "top-down" task factors were antecedents of team boundary-spanning activities. Task dependence, task complexity and task time pressure had positive effects on team boundary-spanning activities. The IMOI model of team effectiveness theory is suitable for the consequence study of team boundary-spanning activities. Team boundary-spanning activities have a positive effect on team performance. Team efficacy plays a mediating role in team boundary-spanning activities on team performance. Research limitations/implications In this study, the data adopted by the team performance belong to qualitative judgment, and the subjective factors of the respondents will inevitably affect the results of the analysis. This study rarely affect the team development stage. This study does not consider the impact of team membership. Practical implications Technology transfer intermediaries serving Chinese manufacturing industry should face up to the positive impact of team boundary-spanning activities on team performance. task is the driving factor of team boundary-spanning activities, focusing on task dependence, task complexity and task time pressure. Team efficacy plays a bridge role at intermediate level. Social implications (if applicable) This study elaborates the consequences of team boundary-spanning activities in the perspective of team effectiveness, which is helpful for technology transfer intermediaries in promoting technology transfer by building effective teams, thereby promoting technology transfer and social progress. Originality/value This study empirically verifies that the IMOI model of team effectiveness theory is suitable for the team internediate level analysis in the context of technology transfer, and develops a multi-level model of research team.
